Speed Contest or Drag Racing And Speed Exhibition Are Serious Traffic Offenses.
Both Speed Contest and Speed Exhibition are 12 point violations. Conviction on a 12 point offense will cause a suspension of your driver’s license. Speed Contest is a Class 1 Misdemeanor Traffic Offense and possible penalties include a $300.00 to $1,000.00 fine, 10 days to 1 year in jail or both. Speed Exhibition is Class 2 Misdemeanor Traffic Offense and possible penalties include a $150.00 to $300.00 fine, 10 to 90 days in jail, or both.
Multiple convictions for Speed Contest or Speed Exhibition can result in the court ordering the law enforcement agency to place an immobilization device on the vehicle involved. On a second conviction, the device can be put on the vehicle involved for up to 14 days and on a third conviction for 14 to 30 days.
According to the Colorado Revised Statutes, Speed Contest can be charged under any of the following circumstances:
- Rapid acceleration
- Exceeding reasonable and prudent speeds for highways and existing traffic conditions,
- Vying for position
- Performing one or more lane changes in an attempt to gain an advantage over one or more of the other race participants.
Speed exhibition includes:
- Squealing the tires of a motor vehicle while it is stationary or in motion
- Rapid acceleration
- Rapid swerving or weaving in and out of traffic
- Producing smoke from tire slippage
- Leaving visible tire acceleration marks on the surface of the highway or ground
At Liberty Law Center, we understand that there can be situations where a person did not engage in a Speed Contest or Speed Exhibition but circumstances appeared that way to law enforcement and resulted in charges. Or maybe the person involved made an impulsive decision to engage in a speed contest or speed exhibition because of youth and inexperience.
In either case, our Colorado Traffic Attorneys will aggressively defend your case to minimize the damage that a Speed Contest or Speed Exhibition charge can have on your life. We will work hard to reduce or avoid jail time and fines, as well as the possible point suspension of your driver’s license. We will take your case to trial if that is in your best interest.
